What Is a Meter Base and Why Upgrade It?
The meter base is the metal enclosure that holds your electric utility meter. It sits between your electrical panel and the utility connection, housing the meter that tracks your energy usage. Over time, meter bases can become corroded, outdated, or unable to handle modern service loads—especially in older homes or properties with increased power needs.
Upgrading your meter base is important because:
- It ensures compatibility with 200 amp service or higher
- It prevents fire risks from loose or corroded connections
- It meets local and utility company code requirements
- It allows for future-proofing (EV chargers, home additions, solar systems)
- It may be required for electrical panel upgrades or service relocations
When Should You Upgrade Your Meter Base?
Consider a meter base upgrade if:
- Your home has a fuse box or outdated panel
- You’re upgrading from 100 amp to 200 amp service
- Your existing meter base is rusted, cracked, or damaged
- You’re installing a generator, EV charger, or solar panel system
- Your utility provider requires a code-compliant replacement
- You’re completing a major renovation or home addition
We work closely with Rocky Mountain Power and other utility companies in Northern Utah to ensure every installation meets utility specifications and local regulations.
Our Meter Base Upgrade Services
Full Meter Base Replacement
We remove the old enclosure and install a modern, weather-rated meter socket that meets the latest electrical codes. This often includes new service conduit, grounding upgrades, and weather head adjustments.
Utility Coordination
Meter base upgrades require disconnecting power at the source. We handle all coordination with your utility company, including shut-off and re-energizing the service after inspection.
Service Capacity Upgrades
If your meter base only supports 100 amps, we install a new unit compatible with 150 or 200 amp service, including new conductors and breakers as needed.
Combined Panel & Meter Upgrades
Often, meter base and panel upgrades go hand in hand. We provide comprehensive service upgrades that include the meter base, main panel, subpanels, and associated wiring.
Weatherproof & Outdoor-Rated Enclosures
We use only UL-listed, NEMA-rated enclosures that withstand Utah’s harsh weather conditions. All installations include proper sealing, grounding, and corrosion-resistant materials.
Our commercial generator installations are designed for critical load handling, seamless transitions, and scalability as your business grows.
